STREET FOOD OF INDIA

STREET FOOD OF INDIA

A Lifeline to humans

Hello Dear Reader!

I’m Krisann Joanne Mendes, a student, currently pursuing culinary arts from ITM Institute of Hotel Management, Oshiwara, Mumbai.

As part of my assessment this semester, I’ve got an opportunity to play the role of a blogger. Everybody has a story which they would love to narrate to their loved ones about how they got influenced by food. My love for street food developed ever since my dad introduced me to it while I was a 5-year-old kid. He always ensured to take my younger brother and me to enjoy street food, every day being a new day where we were introduced to a new food stall, relishing one of the bestsellers at the food outlet, to a variety of flavours. Be it from a basic vadapav to misal pav, pani puri to Idli sambar, he always knew the best spots in our locality. It has always been fun seeing him order the same item on the menu like he did 14-15 years ago.

To me, these memories will always hold a special place in my heart.

Hope this blog has reminded everyone of their childhood days spent with close friends and family.

WHAT IS STREET FOOD?

-          According to me, street food is an item/ drink sold by a vendor/hawker on a particular street/public place. The items can be sold at a stall or in a food truck. All the mise en place for the items on the menu are done few hours prior to when the street food outlet is about to open so the food prepared and served is fresh in order to avoid prepping during the rush hours at the stall/outlet.

HOW DID STREET FOOD ORIGINATE?

-          According to the research I have done, in the olden times, Indian street treats were as diverse as the spices used to flavour them.  Pav bhaji, a combo of bread and curry originated in the mid-1800s which was served as midnight dinner for the factory labors in Mumbai. This is how street food came into existence.

This blog was just an introduction to the topic chosen.

On this wonderful journey, I will take you on a tour through flavours, spices and fusions from different regions of the country starting from the North.

Stay tuned.

See you soon!

Thank you.
