STREET FOOD - WEST

STREET FOOD - WEST

- A Memory lane

Hello Dear Reader!

Welcome back to street food of India blog series !

In this blog I will be sharing my thoughts on the western region of India. Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa are the states which fall under this part of India . The cuisine of each state is differentiated on the basis of history, geographic locations, staples food, cultural influence, etc.

IMPACT OF GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION ON LOCAL CULTURE

· Gujarat having a dry climate , is relatively suitable for smaller variety of vegetables available which are preserved as pickles and chutneys.

· Taking Goa into consideration, having a major port known for trade, being colonized by the Portuguese affected the cuisine .

· The Cuisine of Maharashtra is one of the underrated cuisine in the Indian subcontinent. Marathwada, Deshi, Konkan, etc., are the local formations of this state.

STAPLE FOODS

· Fish, pork, beef and rice are considered staple foods in the region of Goa.

· Corn, gram flour, dry chilies, yogurt, sugar, lentils  and nuts are the staple foods of Gujarat.

· Coconut, peanuts, rice and fish are the staples of the state of Maharashtra.

FAMOUS STREET FOOD

VADAPAV

Who isn’t a Vadapav Lover? Be it a kid or an elderly everyone enjoys this street food item. Originated from the State of Maharashtra to making it’s  way through different parts of the country. A mashed potato mixture , seasonings and a very basic tadka of turmeric powder, curry leaves, mustard seeds shaped in the form of a dumpling coated in a batter of gram flour which is then deep- fried then placed in the center of an Indian bun known as pav/pao accompanied along with some sukkah garlic chutney and mint chutney . It is best served piping hot. This delight  takes me back to my school days where I used to save my pocket money and enjoy this item with some yummy sukkah chutney to enjoying it at a stall famous in my locality serving one of the best garlic chutney.

DABELI

Native to Kutch, Gujarat. This delicacy is made up of a potato filling which has a spicy, tangy  and sweet flavor. It is accompanied with some finely chopped onions and masala peanuts. This took me back to the time where my college friends and me had to record ourselves prepare a dish of our liking. My friend who is a “Gujju” prepared the authentic Kutchi style Dabeli for us and no doubt it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Ok let’s get back to where we stopped.

GOAN BEEF CUTLETS

Native to the State of Goa, Beef Cutlets are one of a kind. It is one of the most popular food found at each and every corner of Goa. Tender and moist thin slice of beef seasoned  then coated in rava and then deep fried and accompanied with the Goan bread known as “Poee” and salad on the side. Goa being my native place, I always make it a point to enjoy this item when I visit Goa. If you are a lover of beef, you should try it out.

GOAN ROS OMELETTE

'Ros' is a term used for 'gravy' in Konkani. In Goan cuisine, this dish is consumed by most of the locals as a snack and as a street food. As Goa being my hometown, it has never failed to surprise me with a variety of Street foods every time I visit Goa. A short description about this dish, made up of chickpeas or chicken, this gravy has a similar taste to xacuti which you can only find in a Goan Catholic household.

Stay tuned for my upcoming blog!

See you!

Thank you
