No matter which part of India you visit. Every state has a different story to share, diverse cultures and traditions influenced by the type of people living over the years in a particular area, every household has a different tale to share pertaining to food. This blog will give you an insight on what southern India is all about in terms of its influence, staple foods and a few famous street foods which people have been consuming over the years and have a great demand for.
When we speak about the cuisine of South India, it usually includes the five states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Telangana, and Kerala.
INFLUENCE OF THE LOCAL CULTURE
The cultural influence and geography both have played a role of creating an impact on the region's cuisine. Although, with large regional differences, each state's cuisine may vary greatly within a specific state. Each region has their own snacks, traditional dishes, light meals, desserts, and drinks that are well-known.
STAPLE FOODS
Rice, dal and coconut are the staple foods of the southern region. A South Indian meal is incomplete without rice being a part of their meal. It can either be served boiled or steamed .
Idlis (steamed cakes made from rice batter), Dal (lentils) are also a part of most meals, dosa or uthappams (pancakes made from a batter of rice and lentil flour.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Rice is accompanied with a variety of dishes. They include Sambaar which is a gravy made up of lentils, tempered with chillies and whole spices, rasam which is a hot and sour lentil soup, dry and curried vegetables, a coconut-based chutney and poppadum’s which are deep-fried crispy lentil pancakes.
FAMOUS STREET FOODS
THATTU DOSA
It is one of the most famous South Indian Street food snack. It can be described as a palm-sized dosa which can be enjoyed with coconut chutney . Red chilli chutney, popaddoms and rasa vada can also be served along with this street item.
MOHINGA
A Burmese dish which is popularly known as Mohinga on the streets of Chennai. A rice-noodles and fish soup which is garnished along with fried onions, garlic ,ginger and the core of the stem of the plantain. It is utterly comforting ,wholesome and flavorful.
GOLI BHAJE
Also known as Mangalore bajji, they are little snacks which are spiced green chillies, curry leaves and ginger. the batter is a sour buttermilk which gives a fermented flavor that runs in the batter. You can pair this food item with a strong South Indian filter coffee.
PUNUGULU
This item is one of the most popular street side snacks of Hyderabad. This snack is basically a typical dosa given a modern touch by adding some chopped onions, coriander and yogurt preparing a batter which are deep – fried to bite- sized crisp golden brown balls .
